Hello everyone š
It’s been quite some time since I’ve written a blog post, and I’ve been meaning to update all of you on my recent trip to Florida but before that, I have to admit something.
I’m in my final year at University and I’m in the same boat as a lot of people, that lost feeling where you’re not really sure where you’re headed in the future. I always thought that doing Econ and Business is great becauseĀ there are so many different paths that I can take, but lately I’veĀ been feeling like it’s my downfall because there are soo many different paths IĀ can take. Whenever I look at people who are my age completingĀ their life goals and achieving so many of their dreams, I have that initial paranoia, “Okay what are you doing with your life Sandhya???”Ā I’m in this weird place where half of my friends alreadyĀ haveĀ secured jobs after graduation and are starting as close to one month after they graduate to as many as 8 months after they graduate, and the other half are freaking out about the future. I, unfortunately, was in the latter half.
But something changed the past couple days. Last week I had to make a hard decisionĀ of accepting a position or not; althoughĀ it would have been fun and I would have learned a lot, it felt like I was going too far away from my present goal of mind. After weeks of debating I finally declined the offer, and it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Instead of feeling like I won’t get any job, I realized that it’s okay if I don’t.
I am aware that people come from differentĀ economicĀ backgrounds andĀ there are some situations in which you must have a job before you graduate, for example if you are an International student and need a work visa, or some other reason. But for the majority of my friends, they’re in-state students who feel like they’re falling behind in a race thatĀ actually doesn’t exist.
I’m here to give you something that actually set me free: not having a job after you graduate is not the end of the world: it does not mean you are unqualified, it does not mean that you are incompetent, and it absolutely does not mean that you won’t ever get a job. I feel like everyone around me is constantly worried about the fact that they don’t have that security, and I agree, having that security and that plan after graduation is fantastic, but I think we all need to remember to take a deep breath and realize it’s not a testament on ourselves, it’s just the way these things happen.
I recently read an articleĀ that really helped me put things in perspective: “Finally, I told her to relax. Iām the worst at relaxing so I know itās not easy. But the truth is, once she gets a job, she will work forever. She wonāt get an indefinite break (at least most people donāt) and she wonāt get to go back to college and do undergrad all over again. I told her to enjoy her city, enjoy her friends and her family, because college is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you donāt get it back :)”
So basically, if you’re stressed about life after graduation, don’t fret because
a. You’re not alone!
b. Your time will come, you’ll getĀ multiple job or grad/law/med school offers and your next biggest stress will be choosing which one to take š
